Diglipur, August 07: Some portions of a recently constructed retaining wall in Kishorinagar, Diglipur, collapsed just months after completion, raising fresh questions about the quality of works carried out by NHIDCL in North & Middle Andaman. Zilla Parishad Adhyaksh Mr. Sribash Das personally inspected the site, claimed the materials crumbled under light pressure, and called for urgent lab testing to verify construction quality.
Speaking to Andaman Sheekha Daily, the Adhyaksh, Zilla Parishad, N & M Middle Andaman, Mayabunder, Mr. Sribash Das said that on the morning of 1st August, while travelling to Mayabunder, he noticed a recently built retaining wall in a collapsed state at Kishorinagar area near Kalara Junction under Diglipur Tehsil.
Mr. Das reportedly stopped his car, walked to the collapsed structure, and examined it closely. He picked up some broken pieces from the wall and checked their strength. According to him, the pieces crumbled easily and reduced to dust with just a light press between his fingers. He alleged that this indicated a serious compromise in the quality of materials used by the agency executing the work under NHIDCL. He has reportedly taken some samples for laboratory testing to verify the material quality.
Mr. Das further said that roads constructed by NHIDCL in N & M Andaman are getting damaged within three months of completion, and that repairs are being done with loose materials. This, he said, raises serious questions about the construction quality. “There is no point in building roads like this, as it only creates commuting problems for the public instead of helping them,” he added.
As per details, the Adhyaksh took the matter to the Deputy Commissioner, N & M Andaman, Mayabunder, and briefed her about the issue. According to Mr. Das, the DC took the matter seriously and assured him that she would personally visit the site and have the materials tested at the A & N Administration’s own laboratory.
