Sri Vijaya Puram, July 28: Deeply frustrated over the deteriorated condition of the Gandhi Nagar road, residents of Teylerabad (Part), New Bimblitan, Pema, and Makka Pahad have announced a public protest on July 29, 2025, from 8:00 am to 11:00 am, demanding immediate action from the administration and Zilla Parishad. The protest, will be held at the junction connecting Tsunami Crossing and New Bimblitan junction.
According to the protest intimation submitted to the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, villagers said the Gandhi Nagar road—stretching from near Jeet Bakery, Tsunami Crossing to the New Bimblitan main road—has become dangerously dilapidated and unfit for even two-wheelers. Once suitable for buses until 2009–10, the road has now lost its strength due to over a decade of neglect and zero resurfacing.
As per locals, the road urgently needs two large culverts, one near the Mohan Ration Shop and another near Krishnan House, in addition to about 2,000 running meters of roadside drainage and complete resurfacing. Despite repeated representations and inspections, including by the present Member of Parliament after his election victory, no effective action has been taken.
Villagers allege that both Zilla Parishad members from BJP and Congress have visited the area and acknowledged the issue but have always cited “lack of funds” as an excuse. The road project, which involves significant civil works, is beyond the capacity of ZP and is supposed to be handed over to the Andaman Public Works Department (APWD). However, the file continues to remain stuck in approvals, leaving the residents in misery.
The villagers, have appealed to the Lieutenant Governor, Chief Secretary, Deputy Commissioner, Zilla Parishad Adhyaksh, and ZP members to personally visit the site and witness their condition. Despite sending multiple letters between September and November 2023, no effective redressal has been offered.
A joint representation for the protest has been signed by nearly 83 villagers, expressing their unity and desperation.
