Sri Vijaya Puram, July 25: The Zilla Parishad Member of Radhanagar Constituency, Mr. Mahadev Gain, has demanded the immediate transfer of a deteriorated rural road near Shyamnagar-I from Zilla Parishad to APWD, citing urgent need for repairs.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha Daily, Mr. Gain said, “The rural road from APWD main road to Joseph Tete’s house at Shyamnagar-I is in a pathetic condition. It has become a daily struggle for school children, patients and villagers to commute on this stretch. The Zilla Parishad no longer has the funds to maintain it.”
The said road, measuring approximately 715 meters, was originally constructed under the Zilla Parishad at a cost of over ₹1 crore and was completed in February 2012. According to official documents, the road included multiple culverts and drainage facilities, but over the years, its condition has deteriorated drastically due to lack of maintenance.
“This road was built with public money and now it lies in ruins. We cannot let this continue,” Mr. Gain said. “I have written to the Chief Secretary of A&N Administration, the CEO of Zilla Parishad, and the Director of RD, requesting them to hand over the road to APWD. Only then can repair work begin under their budget and schemes.”
Mr. Gain also pointed out that the Gram Panchayat, Radhanagar, had officially requested the road transfer back in November 2022. “There is already precedence, paperwork, and support in place. We only need prompt administrative action,” he added.
He also stressed the road’s importance for public services, stating, “This road is not just any village path. It’s a lifeline for students, patients, transporters and general villagers. It connects them to the main road and their suffering must end.”
Mr. Gain appealed to the authorities to expedite the handover and said he would continue to monitor the progress. “We will not rest until this road is handed over to APWD and repaired. The welfare of the villagers is non-negotiable,” he concluded.
