Port Blair, Feb 19: More than 30777 children in the age group of 0-5 years were administered oral polio vaccine in the first round of Pulse Polio Immunization Programme in the entire territory today. About 6454 children were covered in Port Blair while 849 children were given vaccine in Defence area. About 96.78% children have been covered on the first day which will be followed by two-day house to house visit on Feb 20 & 21, 2012.
The inaugural function of PPI programme was conducted at the premises of Nagar Palika Vidyalaya in which the Director of Health Services, Dr. S.K. Paul by administering polio drops. Later, the Director alongwith the Dy. Director (Family Welfare), Dr. Thulasidasan and Dy. Director (Health), Dr. Avijit Roy visited different Pulse Polio Booths of South Andaman and supervised the programme.
A total of 698 fixed booth functioned apart from arrangement at Bus Terminus, Harbours, Religious places, Inter-island vessels and Veer Savarkar International Airport.
Meanwhile, as per the revised date issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi, the second round of PPI will be conducted on April 15 instead of April 1 as announced earlier.
