Campbell Bay, Mar 23: The Nicobar Forest Division, Department of Environment and Forests in continuation of the observance of Turtle Festival carried out an awareness programme at the Anderson Bay Beach, Joginder Nagar today with an effort to create awareness about the importance of Turtle Conservation and its importance to encourage people’s participation from all walks of life.
This Festival is a first of its kind and was celebrated with an aim to promote people’s participation towards sea turtle conservation. The importance of the occasion along with the conservation activities carried out by the Department along with the purpose of organizing such a unique festival was briefed to the attendees.
The programme was attended by representatives from the Laxmi Nagar Panchayat, PHC Unit, Campbell Bay, APWD Department along with PRI members and local residents of Joginder village. About ten students and ten teachers of Govt. SSS, Vijaynagar also attended the programme. The attendees and students were briefed about the conservation activities taken up by the Forest Department and they were also provided with an opportunity to release fresh hatchlings of sea turtles into the sea at the end of the programme. The students and visitors showed unmatched enthusiasm and were delighted to be a part of this activity. A total of about six hundred hatchlings of Olive Ridley Sea turtle were safely released into the sea by the participants and school students embarking their journey into the Ocean.
