Sri Vijaya Puram, Mar 02: In view of the emerging pest damage, especially Rugose Spiraling Whitefly and Mealy Bug infestation in Coconut, Arecanut, and other fruit crops, the Secretary (Agriculture), Ms. Pallavi Sarkar, IAS, has taken initiative to equip the Officers and Officials of the Agriculture Department with better knowledge on the pest identification and management practices. This initiative aims to ensure effective implementation of pest control strategies at the farmers’ field level.
In this connection, an orientation and lecture on IPM techniques for Rugose Spiraling Whitefly and Mealy Bug infestation were conducted in association with experts from Kerala Agricultural University & ICAR-CIARI through virtual mode yesterday for Agriculture Officers and extension functionaries including ATMA staff of the Agriculture Department.
Dr. Manichellapan, Dean from College of Agriculture, Kerala Agricultural University and Mr. Mohit, Subject Matter Specialist from Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sippighat delivered the session though powerpoint presentation.
Dr. Manichellapan delivered an insightful presentation on the identification and management of Rugose Spiraling Whitefly and Mealy Bug infestations. He elaborated on different species of whiteflies and emphasized control measures through cultural and biological methods. He underscored the importance of biocontrol agents, periodic release of parasitoids, and the application of entomopathogenic fungi. Additionally, he recommended early-stage pest control strategies such as soap solutions, Neem Seed Kernel Extract (NSKE), and tobacco decoction.
Mr. Mohit, Subject Matter Specialist at KVK Sippighat, provided a detailed overview of cultural, mechanical, and biological approaches for managing Spiraling Whitefly infestations. Dr. Y. Ramakrishna, Principal Scientist & Head, KVK, focused on practical strategies that can be implemented in the field.
The lecture concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where extension functionaries from various zones raised concerns and sought expert guidance on pest management. The event proved to be an informative and engaging platform for knowledge-sharing, equipping agriculture officials with enhanced skills to combat pest infestations effectively.
