Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb 06: The much-anticipated Chess in School (CiS) Programme for primary school students was formally launched today by Mr. Vikram Singh, Director of Education, A & N Administration, at GDMS Primary, Middle Point, Sri Vijaya Puram. The event kicked off with a ceremonial first move on the chessboard between Mr. Vikram Singh, Director of Education, and R. Kashthuri Bhai, an international chess medalist from the islands, attended by Mr. Sukurajan, Principal of GSSS Boys, Mr. Wilfred Richfield, Headmaster of GDMS (P), and other officials from the Directorate of Education.
The initiative aims to introduce chess as a tool to boost brainpower, improve memory, sharpen focus, and enhance both decision-making and problem-solving skills—abilities closely linked to academic success. By developing these skills, the CiS programme seeks to help students excel in their studies while also uncovering and nurturing young chess talents across the islands.
Initially, the Chess in School Programme will be conducted at six schools in the Sri Vijaya Puram and Wimberlygunj areas throughout February 2025. The programme will later be expanded to cover all educational zones with the commencement of the new academic session. Training sessions will be led by Mr. B. Neelaiah, Nodal Officer for Chess, with his team providing expert guidance and mentorship to the students.
During the launch, Mr. Vikram Singh highlighted the broader vision for chess development in the region. He announced plans to establish a Chess Academy at Netaji Stadium, introduce exclusive chess hobby classes during the summer vacation, and organize an all-age group chess tournament to encourage widespread participation and foster greater interest in the game.
