Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 09: Hodi Craft, started by Nazeer in 2015, brings the rich heritage of Nicobar Islands to life with handcrafted artifacts and décor in coconut shells, bamboo, and natural fibers. From six artisans from each of 12 villages, the initiative has now blossomed into a symbol of tradition and craftsmanship.
Hodi Craft, which has recently been accorded a GI tag in association with NABARD for specializing in Hinpon artifacts inspired by traditional boats, chatais, baskets, and hats, has provided the artisans with a stable monthly income of ₹9,000 and has promoted economic resilience while sustaining the identity of the Nicobari. Nazeer wishes to expand Hodi Craft throughout India to spread the artistry and heritage of Nicobar to a wider populace.
This GI registered user is participating in the national Grameen Bharat Mahotsav organised at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, by NABARD and Department of Financial Services (M/o Finance) from 4th to 9th January, 2025. The Mahotsav, through various discussions, workshops and masterclasses, aims to enhance rural infrastructure, create self-reliant economies, and foster innovation within rural communities. Its objectives include promoting economic stability and financial security among rural populations, with a special focus on North-East India, by addressing financial inclusion and supporting sustainable agricultural practices.
A significant focus of the Mahotsav is to empower rural women through entrepreneurship; bring together government officials, thought leaders, rural entrepreneurs, artisans and stakeholders from diverse sectors to build a roadmap for collaborative and collective rural transformation; encourage discussions around leveraging technology and innovative practices to enhance rural livelihoods; and showcase India’s rich cultural heritage through vibrant performances and exhibitions.
