Port Blair, July 01: The month long celebration of 75th Vanamahotsava was initiated today with an awareness rally organized by South Andaman Forest Division. The rally was flagged off from DFO(SA)’s office, Wimberlygunj at 9.00 am jointly by Mr. A. Soundrapandian, ACF, South Andaman and Mr. K.Abdul Rahaman, Pradhan, Gram Panchayat Wimberlygunj in which about 150 personnels inclusive of PRI members of Gram Panchayat, Wimberlygunj, Kanyapuram and Stewartgunj, general public, staff & workers of South Andaman Division have participated. The rally after passing through the Wimberlygunj Bazaar, while exhibiting placards, banners with environment related themes & messages and raising slogans for protecting & conserving the forests & environment culminated at the Gram Panchayat Office, Stewartgunj. Mr. M.K.Hussain, Pradhan, Gram Panchayat, Stewartgunj received and welcomed the participants at the Panchayat Office. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Hosea, Range Officer, Mannarghat highlighted the importance of Vanamahotsava to the participants and urged the participants to spread the message of the importance of the occasion and planting of atleast two trees per household among the general public. Mr. M.K.Hussain, Pradhan, Gram Panchayat also spoke on the occasion and committed to actively participate in the tree plantation drives all along the month in coordination with the Forest Department. Expressing his views and addressing the gathering, the ACF, South Andaman Mr. A.Soundrapandian informed the participants to plant trees with a hope to have a clean and green environment in posterity and to address the challenges of prevailing adverse climatic conditions to have a proper ecological balance and equilibrium.
Later ceremonial tree planting programmes were also organized at GSS Miletilak and Mithakhadi Gram Panchayat office in which School students, Teachers, PRI members and general public enthusiastically participated.
