Port Blair, May 07: Residents of Andaman and Nicobar Islands are growing increasingly frustrated as the promised upgrade to Sikorsky Helicopters, meant to replace the ageing Dolphin Helicopter fleet of Pawan Hans, faces significant delays.
Last year, a senior official of the Administration had assured to upgrade the entire fleet during an interview in All India Radio. As per reports, one Sikorsky Helicopter arrived in the Andaman Islands nearly seven months ago, aligning with the Administration’s commitment to modernize the fleet. However, the new helicopter remains grounded, awaiting operation due to non-availability of pilots for Sikorsky Helicopter and other administrative reasons.
At present, only two Dolphin helicopters are operational, despite four helicopters being available in Port Blair, again due to shortage of pilots at Port Blair. As preference is given to the southern group of Islands, residents of the North and Middle Islands are facing significant transportation challenges. Although the Department of Civil Aviation is actively trying to manage the situation in a professional manner but many believe that early induction of four new Sikorsky helicopters is probably the best solution to present problem.
Last year, the Ministry of Civil Aviation had reportedly approved the contract and lease agreement for four Sikorsky helicopters, emphasizing their enhanced safety, swiftness, and flying capabilities.
Residents express frustration over the prolonged wait for improved helicopter services, as the ageing Dolphin helicopters struggle to meet demand. The delay has exacerbated transportation woes, particularly for those residing in remote areas. This is high time for the Administration to focus on replacing the Entire Helicopter Fleet of Andaman and Nicobar Islands with the latest Sikorsky Helicopters.
As per details new Air Conditioned Sikorsky Helicopters have three major features in Safety, Swiftness and Flying Capability in difficult weather. There will also be a minor increase in passenger capacity, it is learnt.
