
Mayabunder, Nov. 9: National Legal Service Day was celebrated at the District level by the District Child Protection Unit, Office of the Deputy Commissioner, N&M Andaman at Mahatma Gandhi Government College, Mayabunder today under the guidance of Shri Ankit Yadav, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, N & M Andaman. The students of MGGC participated in the programme. Shri Subhajit Basu, Hon’ble Additional District and Sessions Judge, N&MA, Mayabunder was the chief guest on the occasion while Shri Ashish Joon, Assistant Commissioner (HQ), Mayabunder was the guest of honor. Shri Tarun Kumar Mondal, Hon’ble Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum Civil Judge, N&MA, Mayabunder, Dr. P.K. Palit, Medical Officer (i/c), Dr. R. P. Hospital, Mayabunder and Dr. Swapan Kumar Biswas, Principal (i/c), MGGC Mayabunder were the special guests.
National Legal Service Day is celebrated to raise legal awareness among the people. This day is about helping people realize that no matter what background they are from or what their identity is, they can receive free legal aid. People from marginalized communities, women, children, and minorities are often found to have little to no legal knowledge. On this day, such people are educated about their rights and the free legal services that they can avail of.
During the program, various cultural activities and skits were presented by the college students to raise legal awareness on numerous issues. Altogether, 300 college students participated.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest highlighted the theme ‘Access to Justice for All: Empowering the Marginalized through Legal Awareness’. The guest of honour briefed on the importance of National Legal Service Day. Various issues like Child Rights, Free Legal Aid, Right to Information, Right to Education, etc. were highlighted by other special invitees.
