
Port Blair, Sept 28: On the occasion of World Maritime Day, the Member of Parliament of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma, today organised a motivational event at the Government Girls’ Senior Secondary School. The event served as a tribute to the remarkable achievements of Captain Meera, an alumna of the school, who has made an indelible mark in the traditionally male-dominated field of seafaring.
Captain Meera, who completed her XII exams at the Government Girls’ Senior Secondary School in 2005, currently holds the prestigious position of captain of MV Campbell Bay. Her accomplishment is a source of immense pride for all residents of our Islands. During the event, Member of Parliament Shri Kuldeep Rai Sharma felicitated Captain Meera for her exceptional contributions to the maritime industry.
In his address to the gathering, Shri Kuldeep Rai Sharma commended Captain Meera’s outstanding achievements and expressed his admiration for her dedication. Captain Meera’s achievement as the first woman from our Islands to attain the rank of captain in the maritime industry is truly inspirational.
The Member of Parliament emphasized that while the shipping industry has traditionally been male-dominated, it is not exclusive, and women can excel in this highly lucrative profession.
He noted that with the Transhipment Port in Campbell Bay on the horizon, there is a wealth of opportunities in the maritime sector, and he is committed to empowering and guiding female students from our islands to pursue these promising career paths.
During the event, Captain Meera shared her inspiring journey with the students, who were captivated by the story of one of their esteemed alumni, who has achieved such remarkable heights in her career.
The welcome speech was delivered by the Principal of Government Girls’ Senior Secondary School, Smti. Archana Singh, who said that such events are extremely beneficial for students. She expressed gratitude towards the Member of Parliament for organising such an event and Captain Meera for inspiring the students.
