Port Blair, August 03: Car Nicobar Island is once again facing a severe fuel crisis, as previously reported by Andaman Sheekha Daily. For the past month, residents have been grappling with acute shortages of petrol and diesel, leading to frustration and difficulties.
Living on an island that is already geographically challenging, the fuel scarcity has exacerbated the daily struggles faced by the residents. A local resident expressed concerns over the increasing frustration caused by the frequent fuel shortages, emphasizing that the crisis is making life even harder for the people of Car Nicobar Islands.
According to an official from the Tribal Council of Car Nicobar, a vessel named Manav Star, carrying a minimum quantity of petrol and diesel, is scheduled to sail within two days. Another cargo vessel is expected to sail within a week, which will bring a sufficient quantity of fuel to the island, resolving the immediate crisis.
However, the reality on the ground is that Car Nicobar currently has only a minimal amount of petrol and diesel available for emergency and essential vehicles. Additionally, one of the fuel pumps, connected to a tank with more fuel, is undergoing repairs, further exacerbating the situation. The issue has been brought to the attention of the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), as they are responsible for the supply and repair of the pump in Car Nicobar. Despite regular reminders, a solution has not been implemented yet.
Beyond immediate relief, the residents of Car Nicobar are demanding a long-term solution to address the recurring fuel crisis. They insist on the establishment of a significant storage capacity for fuel on the island, ensuring a buffer stock is always available to meet public needs effectively.
