Port Blair, June 30: The Hindu community residing in Wimberlygunj and its adjacent areas is facing a significant challenge as there is no allotted land for performing last rituals. Expressing their concerns, the Hindu Seva Sangh and local residents have reached out to the Lt. Governor, A & N Islands highlighting the urgent need for a dedicated space for the final rites.
In his letter, Mr. Abhay Kumar, Convenor of the Hindu Seva Sangh said that for decades, the only place where the last rituals for Hindus have been conducted is situated at Lal Bijan Wimberlygunj. Unfortunately, this land falls under the jurisdiction of the Forest Department, leaving the Hindu community unable to develop essential amenities for the “Shamshanghat” (cremation ground). As the land does not belong to the Panchayat or any Hindu organization, progress in addressing this issue has been limited.
In an effort to resolve this long standing concern, Abhay Kumar, Convenor of the Hindu Seva Sangh, along with other community members, has requested the Lt. Governor to intervene and designate a separate area for the Shamshanghat. This would allow for the development of basic amenities and ensure that the last rituals for the deceased can be conducted with due respect, regardless of the season.
