Port Blair, Apr 12: Together with the rest of the country, the A & N Police Fire Service is observing the Fire Service week from 14th to 20th April, 2023 this year. The theme for this year is “Awareness in fire safety for growth of National Infrastructure (AGNI)”. The Fire Service Week is organized every year in memory of a major fire incident that occurred on 14th April, 1944 at Victoria Harbour in Mumbai, in which 336 persons died and 1040 were injured. Out of 336 who died, 68 were Officers and Jawans of Mumbai Fire Brigade. To commemorate the act of bravery of the officers and men of Mumbai Fire Brigade who lost their lives during the fire fighting operation, April 14th is observed as Fire Service Day. Closing programme of Fire Service Week Fire Service Headquarter Chief Guest, Police/Fire personnel
The week-long programme will start with a Commemoration Day Parade on 14/04/2023 at 0700 hours at Fire Service Headquarters, Port Blair. Two minute silence will be observed to pay homage to those Fire Service personnel who had laid their lives for ensuring fire safety of the countrymen all over the nation. Soon after the parade, Fleet March of Fire Vehicles shall be taken out in and around Port Blair town. The rationale behind the week-long programme is to educate the general public with respect to fire safety, educational campaigns through banners, pamphlets, lectures and demonstrations at various institutions including village community premises, hospitals, schools, hotels & resorts. Similar programmes will also be conducted in Fire Stations located at far flung islands.
In the year 2022, a total of 223 fire calls and 587 special service calls were attended by A & N Fire Service and property worth about Rs. 85.46 crores was saved.
The A & N Police Fire Service is committed to generate public awareness about Fire Prevention by conducting special campaigns in densely populated areas, government buildings, industrial establishments, hospitals, hotels and resorts during the Fire Service Week.
