Port Blair, Feb 16: The indiscriminate dumping of construction materials on the roadsides has become a significant challenge for the residents of Port Blair city. Although the issue was under control for a few years, it has grown unchecked once again after normalisation of COVID-19 lockdowns.
Nowadays, it is a common sight in the city to see people dumping construction materials right on the roads, blocking major portions of the road for hours or even for days. This not only disrupts traffic but also poses a serious risk of accidents. Additionally, the construction materials left on the road often lead to damage to the road, further aggravating the situation.
This practice of illegal dumping of construction materials needs to be stopped, and the Port Blair Municipal Council must take a step forward by launching a hotline where people can complain regarding such activities on the sub-roads and branch roads. The council must issue advisories to the public to be more responsible and dispose of their construction materials appropriately.
The accumulation of construction materials on the roadsides also poses a significant challenge for the maintenance of the city’s infrastructure. The damaged roads not only cause inconvenience to the public but also result in increased expenditure for the municipal authorities.
The situation of roadside dumping of construction materials is not only an eyesore but also a danger to the public. The authorities must initiate strict action against those found guilty of the illegal dumping of construction materials.
