Port Blair, May 05: The Andaman Lakshadweep Harbour Works (ALHW) had constructed two passenger sheds on the Shaheed Dweep (Neil Island) Jetty to save passengers from scorching Sun but on the contrary instead of providing relief, the passengers sheds turn into oven during sunny days due to wrong design and wrong use of materials, passengers allege.
This is shocking to see that instead of various steps of certifying designs and construction works, no one raised questions against such faults, for which now passengers, including tourists and locals have to suffer heavily.
During sunny days Shaheed Dweep remains terribly hot and humid and under such conditions if a tourist by mistake enters the passenger shed, he/she feels as if the passenger shed has become a furnace.
Therefore, on all days, except rainy days, one can see all passengers standing outside the passenger shed, which is a painful experience for all. Photographs taken by Andaman Sheekha shows how passengers are standing outside the shed and not a single passenger is using the shed, which shows that the very purpose of constructing the shed has been defeated.
When Andaman Sheekha Daily contacted ALHW officials in this regard, a senior officer of ALHW, on the condition of anonymity, said that the Department is aware of the matter and it is believed that some mistakes happened from the side the engineer, who planned the design of the shed. “We are planning to place some dark stickers over the shed to prevent Sunlight from entering inside the shed,” the Senior Officer added.
