Port Blair, Nov 09: Fishermen community of Campbell Bay today continued their agitation for the second day, as they remained firm on their demands. The fishermen community is protesting against the operation of a fishing trawler in Nicobar District and they are demanding sufficient quantity of Ice Blocks for fishermen.
Second day of Chakka Jam was also organized today at ‘Low Point Junction’ of Campbell Bay which is reportedly 800 meters away from Zero Point, Which is the main protest site.
However, today the protesters were seen more aggressive because their demands were not fulfilled. Later some ladies of the fishermen community protested in front of the Assistant Commissioner’s office too.
It is learnt that today around 600 people were involved in the protest, many of whom wore a black ribbon as a mark of protest. The protesters cooked their own food in protest site, it is reported.
As per information received today the Small Trader Association (STA) gave a letter to Assistant Commissioner in which they demanded police protection against the protesters so that they could operate their business easily.
On this when asked to protesters, they said that they are not protesting to harass public or traders, the protest is continuing because their demands are not fulfilled.
“We have been protesting since last several days, but till now no officer of Fishing Department has reached Campbell Bay to help us neither any positive response has been come by Administration, we are not troubling the local people of the area. We are fighting for our rights. Till the Director of Fisheries or DC Nicobar comes here we will continue the protest,” said a protester.
As per latest reports some protesters have decided to protest throughout the night at protest site and morning another batch of protesters will take their place.
