Port Blair, Oct 04: On 1st Oct 2021 evening six labourers of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF), consumed Brake Oil after which two labourers developed serious symptoms. As per details one labourer died this morning at Campbell Bay due to multiple organ failure while another labourer has been evacuated to Port Blair.
Brake oil is a type of hydraulic fluid used in hydraulic brake and hydraulic clutch applications in vehicles and often smells like alcohol.
According to reports, brake fluids often contain the toxic alcohol diethylene glycol (DEG), which has a boiling point of about 470°F. Diethylene glycol (DEG) is sweet-tasting, odorless, and colorless. If swallowed, DEG can be very dangerous, even fatal, if patients do not receive prompt medical care.
As per details all the six labourers belong to Jharkhand Pakur District and at present they were staying at 63 KM camp of Great Nicobar Island for some construction works.
Sources said while four labourers consumed Brake oil after diluting the same with water, two others Mr. Badu Pahadia, 21 years and Basu Pahadia 28 years, drank with very limited amount of water, because of which they developed severe health issues.
On 2nd October 2021 Badu Pahadia and Basu Pahadia complained about vomiting and other health problems after which they were taken to Health and Wellness Center Gandhi Nagar.
On 3rd October they were referred to Campbell Bay Hospital from where they were referred to Port Blair. But as Badu Pahadia’s health condition deteriorated, he could not be evacuated while Basu Pahadia was airlifted to Port Blair in a Helicopter for treatment.
As per details due to multiple organ failures Badu Pahadia died today at around 12.30 noon.
It is learnt that blood and other samples of other four labourers will be sent to Port Blair tomorrow. Meanwhile, police department has registered a case under appropriate section and further investigations are on.
