Port Blair, June 17: Targeting teachers who are working in Directorate of Education since last many years and working as clerks to avert transfer, the Member of Parliament, Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray has said that “teachers are not supposed to do clerical jobs but unfortunately in A & N Islands all the clerical jobs are done by the teachers”.
Addressing a press conference at MP office yesterday the MP said that there are nearly 200 teachers in the Directorate of Education who are doing the job of a clerk.
“These teachers are highly qualified and as there is an acute shortage of teachers in our islands these teachers should be transferred to different schools in remote Islands for teaching,” the MP said. Mr. Ray also demanded immediate appointment of the clerks for these posts.
Considering the security of these far-flung Islands, the MP demanded to withdraw the Yacht Marina project of Viper Island. He also demanded to declare the Viper Island as National Memorial.
During the press conference the MP highlighted various points, which were discussed during the State Planning Committee meeting.
According to him, during the SPC meeting the MP demanded for proper usage of the planned fund and non-planned fund.
MP also demanded the State Planning Committee for the health check up of Jarawa and Shompen tribals as he alleged that the Shompen tribes are suffering from TB.
He also urged the Administration to remove crocodiles from all the tourist favourite beaches as it can jeopardize the tourism and fisheries sector.
MP also demanded the committee for increasing the salary of private school teachers as they are getting salary less than DRMs.
“The tall claims about GDP growth, are just on paper but such assertions are not in evidence physically. The administration asserted that the territory is riding on a GDP growth of 8% during the State Planning Board meeting held yesterday at Raj Niwas. If the averments are believed to be true, the islands would have witnessed remarkable growth in the recent years, but the fact remains that hectares of agricultural land is lying submerged in sea water since the 2004 tsunami,” he added.
The MP said that during the meeting it has been decided that the education department will introduce computer classes for students from the elementary levels. “Meritorious students from class IX to XII selected from various schools will also be provided Laptops as part of the project from the current academic session,” he said.
