
Port Blair, Mar 09: The Andaman and Nicobar State Social Welfare Board has organized many activities across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on account of celebration of International Women’s Day 2017, on 08.03.2017. Programs such as campaign on Anti-Tobacco, screening of patients with dental problems, general health checkup camps and movie of Pink was screened at JNRM girls hostel.
More over in the morning session in coordination with Jawaharlal Nehru Rajakiya Maha Vidyalaya, Port Blair. Around 500 participants includeing college students staff and public participated in the programme. As part of the program cultural activities on different dance forms, skit on female foeticide were presented by the students. Dr.Francis Xavier, Principal, JNRM while speaking lauded the performance of the students on this occasion. He also highlighted the forwardness of the women in education field by giving example of JNRM i.e, 6o% of students in JNRM is girls and most of them are leading in academics and sports campare to the boys. Dr.Poonam Arora, Chairperson of State Social Welfare Board encouraged women to celebrate every day as Women’s Day and take care of herself The Chairperson explained women has the capacity to give birth. Board felicitated women with outstanding service towards society. Mrs. Reshma Bala, PGT from Janakpur, Rangat and Mrs.S.Laxmi Devi, Sarpanch from Rangat Gram Panchayat to rescue a girl in POSCO. Ms. Mahua for continuing her regular classes in Plant Science Department in spite of being disable. She thanked her parents for believing and supporting to help in fulfilling her dreams. Smti. Sampathy Xalxo, PGT Nirmala School who give her services for the welfare of Vanvasi Mahilas.
At Garacharma, State Social Welfare Board, Dentists of Indian Dental Association, Directorate of Health Services, Dr.Ritika and Smti.Rubana Aziz, Councillor Ward No.18 has jointly organized camps on screening of dental problems and general health checkup to provide treatment, to create awareness on tobacco and substances uses and examine women for pre-cancerous lesions. In this occasion Dr. Poonam Arora, Chairperson, state Social Welfare Board explained that lady is the backbone of the health and well being of the family in all over the islands. Medical practitioners from different specialities i.e, Dr.Krishna Shah (Gynaecologist), Dr.Shaheen (Paediatrician) and Dr.Sharmila (Dentist). The camp was co-ordinated by Ms.Marshella Dung Dung, Board Member SWB and staff, Social Welfare Board.
In North & Middle Andaman, Little Andaman and Great Nicobar patients were screened and examined. The Camp was conducted on the request of Mahila Mandal who supports ban on tobacco and wishes to have a healthy living family. Reports were collected from all the over the islands.
The Pink movie which highlights rights of women has screened in the JNRM girls hostel between 6pm to 8:30pm with support of Principal, faculty, staff and students of JNRM college. was co-ordinated by Mrs. Geeta Kandaswamy (Board Member, SSWB) and Mrs. S.Laxmi Devi (Board Member, SSWB).
Social Welfare Board also exhibited the videos of several women from N&M Andaman and South Andaman speaking on alcoholism, domestic violence and welcoming the “Sakhi Saheli” team. Mrs. Sunita Sharma, Programme Co-ordinator from state board for “Sakhi Saheli” co-ordinated in constituting the committee in North and Middle Andaman and Little Andaman.
Last Programe was celebrated on Women’s Day at Gayatri Chetna Pariwar. Dr.Poonam Arora spoke on our culture of keeing family together and believing in respect for each other. She also highlighted that all religion teach as to be a good soul and spirituality in a family is bonded by the women of the house.
