Port Blair, August 12: Lt. Gen A K Singh (Retd.), Lt Governor of A&N Islands, today visited Govt. Middle School, Junglighat and inquired about the quality of drinking water and the arrangements for the mid-day meal. He directed the Secretary (Education) to lay down standard of cleanliness of school premises and quality of drinking water as well as the toilets. He also issued directions for providing testing kit to the schools of the Islands so that instant testing of quality of drinking water can be done.
Recently, it had been reported that a large number of students of the above mentioned school and Govt. Demonstration Multi-purpose School at Middle Point had fallen ill and had to be admitted in the G. B. Pant Hospital. An enquiry on the issue by the Sub Divisional Magistrate has already been ordered.
Secretary (Education) was asked to activate the Committee of parents and NGOs constituted to supervise the preparations of the mid-day meals served to the children in the Islands. This would ensure that quality is maintained and proper hygienic is observed. Directions were also given for periodic checking and testing of water supply sources in areas like Fisherman Colony, Junglighat and Prem Nagar and similar other localities.
The Secretary (Education) was asked to get the Junglighat School upgraded from the infrastructure point of view.
