Port Blair, Jun 22: Ludwig-Maximilians University, Department of Ethnology organized an International Conference in Munich ,Germany from June 21 to June 24 2013 on “Manifestation of History in the Andaman Islands”.
Dr. Swapan K. Biswas , Associate Professor , Post Graduate Dept. of Political Science , J N R Mahavidyalaya , Port Blair was invited as resource person. He has presented a paper on “participation of Bengalis in Islands politics.”Scholars from USA, UK ,Australia,
Pakistan, Newzealand, and Germany presented their papers in the confrence.
The selection of the subject by the German University proved the interest of many International scholars on these far flung Islands on the globe. The papers presented during the seminar by Indian as well as foreign scholars were based on titles viz. Constructing Mini-India: Postcolonial manifestations of pre-42 communities, Forest clearance & Place Making after Independence: Colonization and rehabilitation schemes, Colonial objects in European collections: The ongoing discourse on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Social & Cultural Dimensions of History in the Nicobar Islands and The politics of Indignity and Conservation.
It is the first time in the history of JNRM that a faculty has attended and presented a paper in an International Conference outside the country. Dr. Biswas has already attended four International Conferences in different institutions in India. He has published two books on Andaman and twenty articles in various reputed journals and edited books .He has completed one research project on “Bengali Settlers in Andaman” under ICSSR , Ministry of Human Resource Development and organized two national level Conference on “ Strategic importance , Political Autonomy and Sustainable Development in Andaman and Nicobar Islands” in September 2011 and on “Netaji and Contemporary Andaman Society “ in March 2013.He is going to organize one more UGC sponsored National level seminar on “Higher Education ;Challenges and Prospects with special reference to Andaman & Nicobar Islands” within a few months . Dr. Iqbal Ahmed, Principal, JNRM, congratulated Dr. Biswas for his academic achievement and wished him all success in life.
