
Sri Vijaya Puram, Mar 03: The district level Viksit Bharat Youth Parliament Speech Competition was organised at MGGC, Mayabunder on 26/02/2026, where students delivered 3- minute speeches on “50 Years of Emergency: Lessons for Indian Democracy.” Participants reflected on the 1975-1977 Emergency’s suspension of civil liberties and press censorship, drawing enduring lessons for strengthening democratic resilience.
Mr. Madhavan, Up-Adhyaksh, N&M Andaman Zilla Parishad, served as Chief Guest, delivering the inaugural address on impact of Emergency and the youth’s vital civic role in strengthening Democracy in India. Mrs. Basanthi Devi and Mrs. P. Chandravathy Zilla Parishad members also graced the occasion. Principal Dr. R.V.R.Murthy delivered the key note address underscoring Viksit Bharat Youth Parliament aligning with the vision of Viksit Bharath @2047’s.
The distinguished jury comprised external Jury Member Mr. Saw Henry George (Retd. Headmaster & Assistant Inspector of Schools, Mayabunder) and Internal Jury Members Mr. Bidhu Bhushan Mondal (HOD Economics), Dr. Rohit Shah (HOD Commerce), Dr. Shiva Shankar (Environmental Studies Expert), and Ms. Varsha Dung Dung (Geography Resource Person).
Special invitees Mr. Sunith Kishore Kejur and Mr. Peter Barla from Nehru Yuva Kendra enriched the proceedings. Students delivered inclusive analyses linking the Emergency to contemporary challenges, stressing robust independent institutions like the judiciary and Election Commission, protection of fundamental rights under Articles 14, 19, and 21, and the roles of free media and vigilant citizens in averting authoritarianism.
In the valedictory function, external Jury Member Mr. Saw Henry George urged the students to hone communication skills for leadership and public engagement. Convenor Dr. G. Godson Bedeiah, Assistant Professor proposed vote of thanks to dignitaries, jury members, faculty, and students. Out of the 38 contestants, the top five have been selected and received certificates amid applause, affirming MGGC’s commitment to nurturing and articulate youth for India’s developed nation vision by 2047. Winners advance to the state-level competition.
