
Sri Vijaya Puram, February 24:A major tragedy was averted near Mayabunder today after a Pawan Hans helicopter made an crash landing in the sea before reaching its destination. Prompt and courageous action by personnel from the Forest Department, police, and local fishermen ensured that all seven persons on board were rescued safely.
Former Mayabunder Pramukh Mr. Abdul Siddique told Andaman Sheekha that three DRMs (Deputy Range Managers) of the Forest Department and one PMF staff member were on their way to Interview Island when they witnessed the helicopter’s emergency landing in the sea. Without wasting any time, they rushed to the spot and initiated rescue operations.
Thanks to their swift response, all five passengers, including the infant, were safely brought ashore at Mayabunder Harbour. They were subsequently shifted to Dr. R.P. District Government Hospital, Mayabunder, where they received medical treatment.
The four personnel who first reached the scene and played a crucial role in the rescue operation were identified as Saw Thomas (Forest DRM), Saw Manashe (Forest DRM), Saw Sakari (Forest DRM), and Karthick (PMF Staff, Police Department). Their alertness, bravery, and quick decision-making have been widely appreciated at the local level. Residents of Andaman and Nicobar Islands are now demanding that these brake youths must be honoured in State level for their services.
