I am delighted to learn that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, in coordination with the rest of the nation, will observe “Animal Welfare Fortnight – 2026” from 14th to 30th January, 2026. This important initiative seeks to enhance public awareness about the ethical obligation to treat all animals with kindness, respect, and compassion.
Since time immemorial, animals have played a vital role in supporting human life and sustaining ecological balance. As a responsible society, it is our collective duty to ensure that animals are not subjected to exploitation or cruelty for human convenience or gain. In the present times, living in harmony with animals has become more essential than ever, and fulfilling our moral responsibility towards their care and protection is a reflection of our shared humanity. Awareness drives, education, and community engagement remain crucial in preventing cruelty and promoting responsible animal care.
The central objective of this observance is to cultivate a culture of empathy, respect, and compassion for all living beings, while encouraging meaningful action for animal welfare.
As Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, profoundly observed, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” The enduring principle of Ahimsa, deeply rooted in our civilizational ethos, continues to guide us in setting an example of humane and ethical treatment of animals. During this Animal Welfare Fortnight, let us collectively reaffirm our commitment to building a kinder and more compassionate society.
On this occasion, I extend my best wishes for the successful observance of “Animal Welfare Fortnight – 2026” and urge all citizens and stakeholders to actively contribute towards the protection, dignity, and welfare of animals.
