Diglipur, N & M Andaman, Oct 10: The Gram Panchayat Pradhan of Kalighat, Mr. Ashit Kumar Mondal , has formally requested the Electricity Department to replace the current bare aluminium conductors with covered (insulated) aluminium conductors in Kalighat village and its surrounding affected areas. The urgent appeal, addressed to the Superintendent Engineer of the Electricity Department in Sri Vijaya Puram , highlights the issue of frequent line faults and disruptions to the electricity supply.
The request, dated September 29, 2025 , states that the electric lines in the village are primarily using bare aluminium conductors, many of which run through heavily wooded areas. According to the Pradhan, tree branches are constantly in contact with these lines, which is the primary cause of the frequent faults and power disruptions.
The letter explains that cutting or removing all the trees, many of which are old and spread across private and common lands, is not practically possible due to their density and importance.
To enhance the overall reliability and safety of the power distribution system , the Gram Panchayat Pradhan proposes replacing the bare conductors with covered (insulated) aluminium conductors or equivalent insulated cables. “Such an upgrade would also contribute to reducing power outages caused by tree branches and improve compliance with modern electrical safety standards,” the letter states. The replacement is expected to drastically reduce line faults, ensure the safety of villagers, and improve the reliability of the electricity supply.
The Pradhan expressed hope that “necessary action will be taken at the earliest to resolve this long-standing issue,” noting that the cooperation of the department “will be highly appreciated by all residents of Kalighat Village”.
