Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb 07: The 4th Annual Sports-cum-Athletic Meet of South Andaman Division was held from 20.01.2025 to 07.02.2025 at Wimberlygunj under the aegis of Biodiversity Conservation, using Sports & athletics as a medium to promote awareness towards diversity of local flora & fauna, as well as to encourage a healthy lifestyle. Accordingly, the White-bellied Sea Eagle was chosen as the official mascot for the meet. Various events such as Half Marathon, Cricket, Volleyball, Football, Table tennis, Badminton, Tug of war & other athletic events were organized during the Sports Meet. The Ranges and Offices under South Andaman Division were grouped into 04 teams viz. Megapode, Teal, Dove and Hornbill.
On 20.02.2025, a Half Marathon (6000 mtrs.) from Bambooflat jetty to Forest Training Institute at Wimberlygunj was organized for Men and Half Marathon (3000 mtrs.) from Bambooflat Jetty to Stewartgunj Jn. for women & Men Veteran category. Mr. Mohammed Jabir of team Hornbill under Men’s category, Mr. M Abdul Majeed of team Hornbill under Veteran Category and Ms. Taranum Parveen of Team Megapode under Women’s Category bagged the record for the first position in Marathon respectively.
The final programme of the Sports Meet, comprising various athletic events, were held on 06.02.2025 and 07.02.2025 at the Wimberlygunj School playground.
The Opening ceremony, held on 06.02.2025, was graced by Mr. Ravi Horo, IFS, Additional PCCF(P&D), as the chief guest. He hoisted the Sports Meet flag and officially declared the meet open.
The closing ceremony, held on 07.02.2025, was attended by Mr. Sanjay Kumar Sinha, IFS, PCCF-cum-Chief Wildlife Warden, A & N Islands, as the Chief Guest, while Mrs. D Padmawati, Pramukh, Panchayat Samithy, Ferrargunj, Dr A. Anil Kumar, IFS, CCF (TC), Dr. S Dinesh Kannan, IFS, CCF (WL) were the Guest of Honour. The event commenced with a welcome address by Mr. Ashwin J Parihar, IFS, DFO, South Andaman, followed by the presentation of the Sports Meet report by Mr. Ravi Kant, IFS, ACF (SA). The best individual Championship Trophy for Men was awarded to Mr. M.Abdul Majeed of Team Hornbill and for Women, it was awarded to Mrs. Sonia of Team Dove. The team Dove won the Championship Trophy. Addressing the gathering, the Chief Guest congratulated all winners and participants and give emphasis on inclusion of Sports as stress buster and to develop sports culture. He praised the participants for their sportsmanship and motivated them with the inspiring message that ‘Failure is a step towards Success’. The Chief Guest also lauded the efforts of the Divisional Forest Officer, South Andaman, for organizing such a well-planned and remarkable event, reflecting the hard work and meticulous planning that contributed to its grand success.
The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Mr. R. S. Sharath, ACF (HQ), South Andaman Division.
