Harinagar, Middle Andaman, December 24: Villagers of Harinagar, Ward No. 6, have decided to block a vital stretch of road from December 25th, citing safety concerns due to severe damage and landslides. The road, which connects to the ATR (NH4), has been heavily impacted by the movement of heavy vehicles transporting quarry products.
The villagers have expressed concerns about the deteriorating condition of the road, particularly a 100-meter stretch, which poses a significant risk to two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and even school buses. Furthermore, landslides have damaged water pipelines and electric posts, causing inconvenience and water scarcity for the residents.
Despite raising the issue during Gram Sabha meetings in November and December, the villagers claim no action has been taken to address the problem. Therefore, they have decided to erect barricades to prevent heavy vehicles from using the road until a retaining wall is constructed and necessary repairs are made.
In a joint petition addressed to the Deputy Commissioner of North and Middle Andaman and shared with Andaman Sheekha Daily, the villagers have requested the immediate intervention of the Deputy Commissioner, Sub Divisional Police Office, Tehsildar, Assistant Engineer, and Pradhan to address the situation. They assure that only small vehicles will be allowed to use the road during this time.
