Baratang Island, Dec. 16: The prolonged closure of the toilet block attached to the passenger hall at Baratang Jetty has created significant discomfort for tourists and NH4 travellers. Closed for the past 3-4 months in the name of repair works, the facility remains incomplete, leaving the public with inadequate alternatives.
Speaking to Andaman Sheekha Daily, Mr. R. Alagerswamy, Zilla Parishad Member of South Andaman Zilla Parishad, expressed concern over the situation. “Prefabricated mobile toilet blocks have been placed as an alternative, but they are insufficient to cater to the daily influx of tourists visiting Baratang for sightseeing and NH4 travelers passing through,” he said.
He further mentioned that officials from Andaman Harbour Works and PMB have assured the completion of the repairs soon, but delays persist due to the contractor’s inability to complete the project on time. Mr. Alagerswamy urged the administration and PMB to expedite the repairs of the toilet block at the Baratang Passenger Hall to provide relief for travelers.
A visit by the Andaman Sheekha team revealed the dire state of affairs. Workers on-site confirmed that the women’s toilet is ready, but the men’s toilet will take more time to be operational. The current lack of functioning facilities has left tourists and passengers without essential services.
Travelers along NH4 have particularly felt the impact. The absence of proper facilities at Baratang Jetty has forced many to rely on the limited and inadequate toilet block at Middle Strait Jetty, which cannot handle the large number of users. Additionally, the short stops at Middle Strait Jetty, a Jawara Check Post area, often leave ATR passengers without enough time to use the facility.
The situation has not only caused inconvenience but also tarnished the experience for tourists, many of whom leave Baratang with negative memories of the islands. “The administration must take urgent note of this issue,” Mr. Alagerswamy said, emphasizing the need for a quick resolution to avoid further inconvenience for the public and tourists alike.
The community and travelers await swift action from the authorities to restore this essential service, ensuring a smoother experience for all visiting or passing through Baratang Island.
