Port Blair, July 8: Port Blair city is among one of the clean cities in India. The Administration is committed to make it the cleanest city in the country. Accordingly, the Administration is working on the vision of zero tolerance to littering. The Chief Secretary has constituted 12 teams under Senior Officers to inspect existing Solid Waste Management facilities i.e. DRCs, Landfill site and suggest various measures to improve their efficiency. The teams are also directed to inspect door to door collection mechanism and to identify vulnerable points where the garbage is dumped by the general public.
In pursuance of this, a team comprising of Shri B.S. Jaglan, IAS, Chief Electoral Officer and Ms Sapna Priya, DANICS inspected Ward No. 1,2&3 Port Blair today. The team found Solid Waste lying on the sides of road and in the drains. Some vacant plots are also being used by public as a dumping ground. Garbage was also found lying in front of several shops, hotels and houses etc. The team observed that proprietors of some of the shops were not segregating the wet and dry waste properly. The team directed PBMC Inspector to challan these shops on the spot. Nine challans of Rs 500/- each were issued on the spot. All the shopkeepers and house owners were advised to follow the guidelines of Solid Waste Management i.e. to keep separate bins for dry and wet waste.
The Administration remains dedicated to implement effective waste management strategies and will continue to monitor and enhance these efforts to ensure a sustainable and clean environment to all the residents of Port Blair. The Chief Secretary appeals to the general public to participate proactively in this cleanliness drive and to keep their city neat, clean and garbage free thereby contributing their bit to make the city amongst the best in the country.
