Port Blair, Feb 13: The post 1942 Bengali settlers settled in Andaman and Nicobar Islands under various rehabilitation schemes have now been notified in the Central list of OBCs for the UT of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The Administration had taken up their case and Lt Gen (Retd) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM, Lt. Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands had demi-officially taken up the matter with the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. Shri Mukul Wasnik, Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt of India has informed the Lt. Governor that the community has been notified in the Central List of OBC for the UT of A&N Islands.
The Central Government, in exercise of the powers conferred under section 2 of the National Commission for Backward Classes Act, 1993 has notified the post-1942 Bengali settlers in the islands in the Central List of OBCs in respect of A&N Islands. The notification takes effect from the date of publication of the resolution dated 8 December 2011 in the Gazette. The above notification will go a long way in fulfilling the aspirations of the post-1942 Bengali settlers who were settled under various rehabilitation schemes in A&N Islands, a communication from Raj Niwas stated.
