Waiting to walk since last 15 long years

Port Blair, Feb 12: Kukurani can sit on a chair for hours and hours, this is what she has been doing since nearly last 15 years. Sitting, lying down and waiting are the only three options left in her life. It’s been a long wait, to be able to stand once again on her legs.
Kukurani, 55 years, is suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) since nearly last 20 to 25 years. RA is a chronic, systemic inflammatory disorder that may affect many tissues and organs, but principally attacks flexible (synovial) joints.
According to health related websites, the process in RA produces an inflammatory response of the capsule around the joints (synovium) secondary to swelling (hyperplasia) of synovial cells, excess synovial fluid, and the development of fibrous tissue (pannus) in the synovium. The pathology of the disease process often leads to the destruction of articular cartilage and ankylosis of the joints.
According private doctors, in Kukurani’s case she has not been treated well in government hospitals. As she lives in Nibudera area of Middle Andaman, she could not get specialized treatment in initial days. Moreover, Kururani hails from a BPL Family and hence treatment in private hospital is beyond her reach.
As per doctors RA patient requires regular medication for a long time, which did not happened in case of Kukurani hence she has developed deformities of all joints since last nearly 15 years. Presently she is wheel-chair-bound and her family members keep trying their luck by taking her to one private hospital to others, wherever a free treatment is offered.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, Mr. Vivekananda, the son-in-law of Kukurani said that recently they had gone for a telemedicine session in a private hospital and after that they have been assured that Kururani, will be able to walk again if her both the knees are replaced.
“We don’t have money even to pay the bill in local private hospitals, doctors often provide her free treatment considering that fact that we are from a poor family. Now for this operation the estimate cost will be Rs. 4 Lakhs, which is impossible for us to arrange,” Vivekananda said.
Recently the Lt. Governor had released amounts for a few poor patients and now the family of Kukurani is also eagerly waiting for such assistance from the side of Administration.
“We don’t know how to do all paper works but still we are running from pillar to post to arrange some money for her treatment. Hope that Lt. Governor will release some amount for her treatment too, so that she can again walk on her legs after nearly 15 longs year,” he added.
After last telemedicine session at Port Blair on 10.02.2012 the family left for Nimbudera on 11.02.2012 as Port Blair city is too expensive for them. They have left with a hope that some day they will get some financial support from Administration for the treatment of Kukurani, till then Kururani will have wait and wait and wait.…..
