Sale depots fail to provide Minor forest products to villagers
Mayabunder Correspondent
Mayabunder, June 16: The existing sale depots of Mayabunder have totally failed to provide Minor Forest Products to the villagers, it is alleged.
“It’s the job of the forest department to cut and supply the POSTS and JUNGLEE BALLIES to the villagers as they charge money for those. A POST cost Rs 65/- and a single JUNGLEE BALLI costs around Rs 25/-, but instead of supplying of their own they show the villagers a piece of land and ask them to cut MPFs by their own. In that case what is the need of having Sale Depots of Forest Department,” a villager of Mayabuder complained.
“We are supposed to travel 8 long kilometres to get POSTS and JUNGLEE BALLIES, it costs more and we are poor and are not capable of spending so much money only in travelling,” he added.
When we have to cut and take the POSTS and BALLIES of our own then what for the forest department is charging money from us.
This is high time for the Forest Department to wake up and provide some relief to these poor villagers by supplying processed MFPs through the Sale Depots.
Lalaji Bay & Merk Bay Should Be Developed Under PPP Mode: Mohan
Port Blair, June 14: The State President, BJP, Mr. R Mohan has requested the Lt. Governor and the Chief Secretary, A&N Administration to develop Lalaji Bay and Merk Bay sea beaches of Long Islands under PPP mode. He has stated that these beautiful destinations of Long Islands have marvellous potential to attract tourists but due to lack of required number of speed boats, cleaned toilets, changing rooms etc. tourists think twice before visiting these places.
Mohan thus requested to provide necessary infrastructures at these spots and allow adequate numbers of speed boats to Long Island connecting Havelock to Port Blair. He further advocated that the land allotted to the Forest Department for construction of office of the DFO and staff quarters may be allotted to the Directorate of Panchayat for construction of Tourist accommodation. This will fetch more tourists since the office of the DFO has been shifted to Rangat and the land along with a dilapidated building on it is lying unutilized.
The State President BJP also requested for deployment of life guards and police protection in these beachesand also North Bay, Corbyn’s Cove and other beaches of tourist interest to avoid any mishap.
