Port Blair, May 11: The Children’s Summer Sailing Camp conducted from 01 May 14,under the aegis of Andaman and Nicobar Command, at Indian Naval Watermanship Training Centre (INWTC), Port Blair concluded on 10 May 14. The camp was aimed at inculcating a spirit of adventure among children of various age groups, and to promote water adventure activities in these emerald isles.
The entire event was coordinated by INS Jarawa, and was attended by 37 children, including 10 children from our civil fraternity. Capt Karanjit Sharma, Commanding Officer, INS Jarawa flagged off the event on 01 May 14.
During the Camp, children were imparted instructions, practical demonstration and hand-on experience on various sailing boats. The children were familiarised with the various parts of sail boats,knots, sailing terms, boatmanoeuvring, rigging/unrigging, launching andrecovery, improvisation of sailing gears, racing and racing signals, emergency signals, means of communication and towing of sail boat. Apart from this advanced concepts of sailing in different water conditions, man overboard drill and capsize recovery were also taught. The children were given instructions on Enterprise Cass Boats, Laser andOptimist. Apart from this children were also imparted basic training on Hobbiecat, Kayak and Gemini. During the conduct of event safety aspects were given utmost importance.
The event was conducted under experienced and professional instructors of the Indian Navy, Shri Saroj Kanga Thakur, an ex-Indian Navy Sailor and Ms Tanaz K Noble, a professional Kayaking Instructor.
The Closing Ceremony was conducted on 10 May 14, in which Rear Admiral Sudhir Pillai, NM, Chief of Staff, Andaman and Nicobar Command was the Chief Guest. Mrs Rama Pillai gave away the prizes to the winners in various events. All participants were given certificates for successful completion of the camp.Speaking on the occasion, the COS applauded the efforts of the Naval Component, INS Jarawa and INWTC(PBR) for conducting event of such a magnitude. He also commended the efforts and enthusiasm shown by the participating children, and urged them to strive harder so that our islands produce world class sailors in various categories. He appreciated INWTC(PBR) staff for being in the fore front in organising sailing activities and promoting watermanship activities in the Command. He also appreciated INS Jarawa’s overall logistic planning, the coordination among all Components and the meticulous and safe execution of the camp, which was a classical example of Jointmanship.
In past also, INWTC(PBR) has successfully conducted various events like Jal Kreeda Diwas, Power Boat Handling, Para Sailing, J-24, Enterprise Class Sailing Championships and is presently gearing up for the forthcoming Asian Championship selections being conducted by Naval Headquarters
