Sri Vijaya Puram, Sep 19: Campbell Bay witnessed a unique sporting spectacle this evening as the bustling Campbell Bay Junction at Zero Point was transformed into an open-air chess arena for the southernmost island’s first-ever Street Chess event.
The event brought together players of all ages, who displayed their skills and love for the game in front of an excited crowd. The lively junction turned into a center of strategy, with matches unfolding under the open sky. Onlookers gathered with enthusiasm, cheering and enjoying the thrill of community chess for the very first time.
The programme was inaugurated by Mrs. Rameshwari, Pradhan, Gram Panchayat Campbell Bay, as Chief Guest, along with Mr. Prahalad Singh, Pradhan, Gram Panchayat Laxmi Nagar, as Guest of Honour. Both dignitaries jointly opened the event with a ceremonial move on the chessboard.
Prizes were awarded to young participants, recognizing their skill, dedication, and sporting spirit. The event not only provided a platform for budding players but also reflected the growing popularity of chess as a mind sport in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
The initiative was organized by the Department of Education with the support of the Campbell Bay Educational Zone.
