Port Blair, Mar 06: Population growth and rapid pace of urbanization pose many environmental challenges for the effective management of essential services. One of the these is Solid Waste Management (SWM) this, if neglected, may have serious environmental and social impacts. In the Capital city of Port Blair, the responsibility of management of Solid waste with PBMC and the PBMC has been holistically doing its best to maintain and improve the environment.
About 70 M. Tons of mixed garbage per day is generated in Port Blair City which was earlier collected and transported to the dumping site without any segregation. In compliance of MSW Rules, 2000, the door step collection and segregation of garbage will be stated in 15 selected areas/colonies, 100% of 786 housholds covering an estimated population of 2755 of these areas will be covered in the first phase.
Housholds will be educated/persuaded to store their garbage in two separate bins i.e one for bio degradable and other for non-bio degradable waste. The Bio-degradable waste will be collected every morning. Non-bio degradable waste will be collected once-a week by the sanitary staff of PBMC. Bio-degradable waste will be transported to Gandhi Park for composting. Non-bio-degradable waste will be taken to plasma pyrolysis plant at Brookshabad for shipping to mainland through private agency for its safe disposal and recycling. To achieve 100% door step collection and segregation in all 18 wards, PBMC has planned to create awareness on the crucial role of the residents and other stake holders in clean and appropriate solid waste disposal practices.
This endeavour — “Do IT YOURSELF” – will be launched on 16th March, 2013 in all the selected colonies, PBMC will also seek the assistance of NGOs, Govt Agencies and the people’s representatives in establishing a sound SWM System for the protection of environment and health of the resident of Port Blair.
