Diglipur, Dec 10: Leakages in the drainage system of Government Senior Secondary School Diglipur’s Septic Tank have become a constant source of nightmare for the students as well as people living around the school.
According to reports, nearly 25 years ago the toilet block was constructed for the school but after that no renovation or repair works were ever carried out. Though the school authorities cleans the toilet blocks often but the pipes connecting the septic tank are totally damaged and hence sewage flows openly, making it impossible for people to stay in the area even for a minute.
But poor students of the school are forced to bear the foul smell and stay in school for several hours. Equally troubled are those people of Police Department, who have got quarters just behind the school.
“We have to keep our doors and windows closed all the time. The foul smell of sewage is killing us,” said an occupant of the Police Quarter.
Situation is so bad that often sewage flows just close to the wall of school building, filling the entire area with ‘aroma’ of dirt. “We have to put handkerchief on our nose while crossing the road, which is adjacent to the school,” said a resident of the area.
When contacted, Andaman Sheekha Correspondent was told that the School Authorities have sufficient funds to repair the said toilet block and many requests have already been made by the school authorities to the APWD in this regard but till now the APWD has not responded.
“This may cause serious health hazard and also may spread epidemic among students,” said a teacher of the school, who does not want his name to be quoted.
Hope that considering the threat to the life of innocent students, the Lt. Governor, the Chief Secretary and the Secretary of Education, will intervene into this matter and direct the APWD to take some immediate preventive measures.
