The author, Sheo Nath’s debut English novel released on October 7, is an amazing journey of the trial and tribulations of the central women character, a rape victim.
The novel gives a realistic description of how a rape victim feels and and how she gathers herself bit by bit, piece by piece. Her story is narrated in such a way that you empathize with the central character and feel the pain and anguish of the victim. The victim, slowly and slowly starts her professional life as psychologist and tries to boost the confidence of other women friends to confront the society, which is biased against the rape victim. She also gets into correspondence with one jennifer, a lady from Wisconsin, US and through her, gets to know about the deplorable condition of women across the globe and in turn, shares her own views. She has few friends, who fight the menace of rape and workplace molestation in their own way.
The language of the book is so simple, yet so powerful that you get fully engrossed in the book and finish it in one go. It should be called an achievement of the author that he has managed to write such a novel without naming the main protagonist and leaves it on her to disclose that she was tormented physically. It is probably first such novel to use this literary technique and yet keep the story capitavating enough. Further, the novel mentions no place in particular, but it is evident that it is based in India. These are pointer to the literary skills of the author.
According to the own admission of the author, it took many years for him to complete the book, as it has highlighted a very sensitive issue of rape. However, the issue has been tackled with utmost maturity. He has hit the society hard over its attitude towards rape victim. The author has also attacked the politics played over the issue. The novel even points out how fake rape charges are doing disservice to women issues.
An interesting trivial is that the novel has been finished in Port Blair, though it was initiated in Hyderabad. The author is well aware of the social fabric of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and has expressed satisfaction over the status of women in the Islands.
A great gesture on the part of author is the declaration that the author’s royalty would be donated/ used for women’s empowernment/ cause. Kudos to the noble intentions of the author.
Overall, it is must-read novel for any sensible human being who stands up for the cause of women.
