Mayabunder, Sept 13: The Andaman Trunk Road is presently in such a pathetic shape in various pockets of North and Middle Andaman that it is hard to believe that the muddy terrain is a National Highway.
Andaman Trunk Road stretches of Baratang, Kadamtala and Mayabunder are in worst shape and heavy rain have exposed that how carelessly the Andaman Trunk Road up-gradation works are being carried out by NHIDCL contractors.
Various pockets the Andaman Trunk Road in North and Middle Andaman looks worst than a village muddy terrains. In some areas it become impossible to drive vehicles because of loose and slippery mud.
In other places the potholes are bigger than craters while in some places newly laid road surface have either developed cracks or potholes.
Residents suspect that there is compromise with the quality of work and hence roads constructed at South Andaman looks far more solid than the roads constructed in Middle and North Andaman. Many have demanded a CBI enquiry in this matter.
ATR travelers crossing Middle Andaman and Mayabunder region are suffering heavily, worst sufferers are patients of North and Middle Andaman, who are brought to Port Blair via Andaman Trunk Road in case of emergency.
School Students are equally hit by this bad road as they find it extremely difficult to cross the muddy and slippery road to reach schools.
People of various regions are now planning a massive protest against NHIDCL for such careless work.
“Even in case of rain, the NHIDCL must make the road, motorable so that risk is minimum for commuters. If tomorrow a major accident takes place due to pathetic condition of ATR, who will be responsible for that ? The contractor concerned or the NHIDCL?” questioned an Islander.
