Port Blair, May 15: Landing Craft Utility (LCU) MK IV class of ship, ‘LCU 57’ has been commissioned into the Indian Navy by Lieutenant General PS Rajeshwar, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC, Commander-in-Chief, Andaman & Nicobar Command on 15 May 20 at Port Blair. Indigenously designed and built by M/s Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE), Kolkata, the ship amply displays India’s indigenous ship building capability and is aligned towards the ‘Make in India’ initiative of the Government of India.
The ship is designed for Amphibious Operations with sea-lift capability to carry Main Battle Tanks, armoured vehicles, combatants and military stores. Other roles include surveillance missions, logistics ferry, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) support, Search and Rescue (SAR) operations, etc.
