Port Blair, Jan 25: The Lt. Governor, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM has appealed to the public representatives, teachers, parents and officials to guide and encourage the new crop of citizens and move towards cent per cent enlistment of voters in the islands, so that they can be responsible participants in India’s democracy and the process of nation building. He was addressing as the chief guest of the National Voters’ Day celebration held in the auditorium of Tagore Govt. College of Education here today.
The Lt. Governor said that people always elect those whom they want to govern them and it is therefore their solemn duty towards the nation and its institutions to exercise their vote for the best results. Today, some new citizens were included in the voters’ list, who will frame their own future as also of the nation. These new voters should understand their responsibility and duty and must exercise their right to vote, he said.
The Lt. Governor said that India’s democracy, being the largest on earth not only invites awe and wonder, but also respect, because in such a large country, conducting free and fair election is not so easy. “India’s glorious democratic traditions have inspired several nations to invite our institutions, especially the Election Commission of India, to guide them on the path of democracy”, he said and expressed happiness that all elections in these islands have been conducted in a free, fair and peaceful manner.
The Lt. Governor administered the voters’ pledge to the gathering and also distributed Electors’ Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) to the newly registered voters on the occasion.
