In 2015, the Government of India made it mandatory for all road developers in the country to use plastic waste for road construction. This proposal came in effect after Rajagopalan Vasudevan, a professor from Madurai’s Thiagarajar College of Engineering, laid out a process of building roads by recycling plastic waste. Since then, many cities have used plastic waste to construct roads. Now PBMC had followed this route. Even though segregation of plastic from the garbage waste is a time consuming process without the cooperation of public and Business houses, PBMC is trying its level best to cope with the situation. There are reports that there’s scarcity of space for storing bulk of these plastic wastes by PBMC. In the present scenario if APWD also takes up Road construction work using plastic wastes in coordination with PBMC, then the effort to segregate plastic from daily garbage will be fruitful. Else the quantity being accumulated in large quantity through, Milk pouches, curd pouches, Oil bottles, packed consumable items etc will be much more than what PBMC can handle. The effort of PBMC needs appreciation considering the fact that it’s an herculean task for the poor Sanitary Mazdoors who were never trained for such a transition.
