Port Blair, Feb 25: The Department of Agriculture, Little Andaman in association with UT Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA), organized a two day training programme on promotion of ‘Bee Keeping’ in the field of Smt. Rupashi Biswas, at V.K. Pur Gram, Little Andaman on 24th and 25th February 2020.
Dr. Chanda Srivastava, Assistant Director (Agri), in her welcome address emphasized the importance of Bee Keeping and motivated the trainee farmers to adopt apiculture for doubling their income. As bee keeping will not only contribute in increasing the productivity but also a boon for unemployed youths.
PRI Member, V.K. Pur Gram Panchayat, Shri. Sanjay Biswas lauded the Department for conducting the training programme in farmers’ field, which will build up confidence in farmers to take up Bee Keeping.
Smt. Bindu Raghunath, Agriculture Officer, Little Andaman briefed about different species of honey bee and the characteristics of bee colony. Shri Alfred Abraham, Agri. Assistant requested the farmers to avail the benefits of subsidy extended under High Value Agriculture scheme.
During the programme, other Extension staff also spoke on various topics like setting of bees in beehive, bee keeping appliances, shifting and handling of beehive, method of extraction of honey and its benefits.
A video clipping on bee keeping and techniques of honey extraction was presented. Kits for bee keeping were also distributed to all the 20 participants.
