Port Blair, Oct 14: Although the Education Department claims of providing all kind of facilities to government run schools, a government school in the capital city of this UT, GSSS Prothrapur, doesn’t even have sufficient benches for students.
On a complaint received by Mr. Sanish, a social worker of Prothrapur area, Mrs Sampa Banerjee, Member, UT Commission for Prevention of Child Rights (UTCPCR) visited GSSS Prothrapur in the presence of Mr Sanish and found that students from class I to VI are attending their classes by sitting on the floor due to non- availability of benches since last 03 years.
The school is also not having sufficient drinking water facility for students, the UTCPCR member found.
Mrs. Sampa Banerjee found that the school doesn’t even have proper fencing and there is pathway which cuts through the school, and the pathway is used by the nearby villagers as a short-cut, which is wrong, as per Mrs. Sampa Banerjee.
“Because of no fencing around the school, the school ground is left to be used by the drunkards, drug addicts in the late night hours. Beer bottles and other objectionable substances are often found around the ground,” said Mrs Sampa.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, Mrs Sampa said that when she spoke to the principal of the school she said that the matter was highlighted many a times in upper level but no steps has been taken up yet.
During the visit, Mrs Sampa also spoke to the Principal, GSSS Bhathubasti, who is the DDO of the school. The Principal, GSSS Bhathubasti reportedly assured that within one month all the problems in the school will be sorted out.
