Port Blair, Jan 22: The Union Home Minister, Shri P Chidambaram, along with the Lt. Governor, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM visited Car Nicobar today. On arrival, the Minister visited Tsunami Memorial at Big Lapathy village, where he laid a wreath and paid tribute to the victims of the earthquake and tsunami of December 26, 2004.
Thereafter, the Minister inspected the Car Nicobar Coconut Mission at Small Lapathy village, where large number of people from the village had gathered. The Minister appreciated the efforts of the Administration for introducing new technologies for improvement of agriculture practices by the people for high yielding coconut plants, which is the main source of livelihood of the people of Nicobar islands. The Minister also inspected permanent shelters at Tamaloo village and interacted with the inmates and the residents of the village present on the occasion.
Later, the Minister held meeting with the members of the Tribal Council Car Nicobar in the Community Hall at Perka village, in which he appreciated the courage and resilience of the Nicobarese people in rebuilding their society. The Minister also praised the joint family system being adopted by the Nicobarese and their traditional way of life.
At Raj Niwas, the Union Home Minister met the representatives of fishermen, craftsmen, ex-servicemen from Campbell. The Minister also met the Great Andamanese tribal, working with the Administration and employees of the A&N Administration associated with Jarawa and other tribes.
Later, the Minister held a press conference in the conference hall of Raj Niwas in which all the local media persons of the islands were present.
