Port Blair, Sept 14: A massive protest demonstration and procession was taken out against unprecedented power cut and poor condition of road, by the Non-Gazetted Govt. Officers’ Association, A & N Islands and the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) today 14th September, 2017.
The demonstration was staged infront of the Superintending Engineer’s Office of Electricity Department. The participants of the demonstration shouted slogans denouncing current cut and bad condition of roads.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Mr. T.S.Sreekumar, General Secretary of the Association said that the real reason for the present condition was unchecked corruption at the upper rungs of the Administration. He re-iterated the need to break the nexus between corrupt politicians, officers and contractors.
Mr. B.Chandrachoodan, General Secretary, CITU lambasted the Administration for its failure to ensure regular supply of current and moterable roads. He explained the methodology adopted by Surya Chakra Power Corporation Limited (SPCL) to extract unreasonable amount from the Administration with the help of people in higher-ups. He further said a fully developed democratic set-up could have been ensured better living conditions in the islands.
Mr. S.L.Vinjit, Secretary, South Andaman Teachers’ Branch recalled how the present crisis slowly developed while the Administration remained as a mute spectator.
After the demonstration the participants took-out a procession braving intermittent rain. The procession was led by Mr. G.P.Mandal, Mr. R.Surendran Pillai, Ms. Nasreen Begum, Mr. D Clement Stephen, Mr. Karuana Chetty, Mr. R.Papa Rao and Mr. R D Yadav.
The protest programme ended with the vote of thanks by Mr. S.N.Mishra, Vice President of the Association.
