Port Blair, Dec 18: Recently three cases of accidental airgun shot (Lead Pellets) injury in head and neck area have been treated in GB Pant hospital. All the pellets were lying adjacent to vital structures like eye ball and sinuses.
Injuries were treated by microsurgical techniques avoiding damage to the vital organs. Dr Deshpal, ENT surgeon, told this paper that seemingly harmless lead pellets shot by airguns can cause severe injuries and may even prove fatal.
The lead in theses pellets can cause lead poisoning if left in body tissue for long. He also emphasized that the populace should be sensitized to this danger and advised to handle these weapons carefully.
