Port Blair, Dec 07: As part of the ongoing raids at various location of Port Blair city by the Food Safety Unit, South Andaman in connection with prohibition of sale of tobacco in these Islands. A specific tip from PS Aberdeen was received on 29.11.2013 and a raid was conducted at a food business premise viz. M/s Poonam Enterprises, Gurudwara Lane. The team comprising of Shri Tahseen Ali and Shri S.S. Santhosh, Food Safety Officers alongwith Shri S. Rajendran, helper seized Zen 55 brand of tobacco from the premises owned by Shri Pijush Guha Roy. The market value of seized contraband tobacco product is Rs. 14,000/-. The Food Business Operator was adjudicated by the Additional District Magistrate, South Andaman on Dec 5, 2016 for the offence committed by him u/s 55 & fine of Rs. 35,000/- was imposed and the amount has been realized.
And on the direction of the District Food Safety Officer, South Andaman on 29.11.2016 at 6 PM another team of officials comprising Shri Tahseen Ali, Smt. S. Nisha and Smt. Sarina Nadeem, Food Safety Officers and Shri P. Malkondiah, helper inspected the godown of TCI Freight, Junglighat and seized 15 cartoons of Karishma Brand tobacco weighing 600 Kgs. with an approx. market value of Rs. 3 lakhs belonging to Shri Chittarajan Roy Choudhary, Prop. M/s Calcutta City Supplier, Minnie Bay. The Additional District Magistrate, South Andaman adjudicated the Food Business Operator for the offence committed u/s 61 & 63 of the FSS Act and a fine of Rs. 55,000/- was imposed and the amount has been realized.
Further, the Additional District Magistrate, South Andaman has directed to destroy the seized items by burning within 5 days.
The entire inspection was closely coordinated and monitored by the District Food Safety Officer, South Andaman.
All the Food Business Operators have been once again warned not to indulge in selling, storing and distributing of contraband products to avoid legal action under FSS Act, 2006.
