Port Blair, Nov 30: The Government of India in a historical move to fight corruption, black money, money laundering, financing of terrorists as well as counterfeit notes, vide Gazette Notification dated 08.11.2016 has cancelled the legal tender character of the old high denomination bank notes of Rs.500 and Rs.1000 issued by RBI. Subsequently, the Government of India has also taken several measures to fully protect the interests of honest and hard-working citizens of India and mitigate the hardships faced by the citizens.
However it has been observed that some contractors are paying in advance wages to the workers in dominations of Rupees Five Hundred and One Thousand of cancelled currency.
In this regard the contractors and Employers of Shops & Commercial Establishments, Factories, Hotels, Restaurants and other businesses are advised to open bank accounts of their employees/workers immediately and remit salary into their bank accounts, the employers are also advised to refrained from paying salary/wages to workers in cancelled currency of old Rs.500 and Rs.1000 denomination. The workers are advised to report any such incidence immediately to nearest Police Station or Labour Department Phone No. 231338.
The Labour deptt in association with State Bank of India shall be holding special bank account opening camps for workers across the islands. A special camp at Bhatubasti shall be held on 2nd Dec 2016 from 6 pm to 8 pm, the workers and employers of the Bhatubasti market are requested to avail this facility.
